Client

Local Authority in Suffolk.

Site

Former car dealership with underground oil storage tanks located in the town centre.

Objectives

Compass was commissioned to establish the extent and severity of sub-surface contamination at the site and to produce a remediation methodology in order for the site to be redeveloped into residential apartments.

Actions

To meet the client’s objectives, Compass completed a review of third-party reporting at the site and a Phase I desk study and site walkover to identify potential sources of contamination, pollutant pathways and environmental receptors.

Potential pollutant linkages were identified and so a Phase II site investigation was developed to further assess contamination underlying the site.

Hydrocarbon contamination was identified in soils, groundwater and ground gas which was found to present risks to human health and controlled water receptors.

In addition, during the investigation, Compass undertook a geotechnical assessment to inform foundation and substructure design.

A remediation options assessment and strategy was developed for the client in order for the site to be remediated to a condition suitable for redevelopment.
