Our Managing Director, Stewart Ower, is a leading expert in the field of Environmental Risk Management and Pollution Mitigation. Having just completed his term as Chairman of the UKSpill Association, Stewart is recognised as a champion of standards and quality by Environmental Regulators, Emergency Services and the Environment Protection and Spill Response Industry alike.
Stewart has 15 years of experience as a Managing Director in the Environmental Consulting industry and has provided specialist services for a wide array of sectors and clients. During this time Stewart successfully grew a business from one to over 100 staff, handling over 1,000 projects per year. He formed Compass Environmental Consultancy in 2017 in order to specialise in providing environmental risk reduction services to industry.
Stewart started his career in the Food Industry where he experienced first-hand the challenges of keeping pollutants and the local watercourse separate! He then spent 10 years at the National Rivers Authority and Environment Agency investigating and mitigating the effects of pollution incidents and prosecuting offenders.
As a Pollution Prevention Specialist at the EA, Stewart authored national Pollution Prevention Guidance for Industry – PPG21 Incident Response Planning and PPG26 Drum & IBC Storage.
In his role as an Environment Protection Specialist he was responsible for developing and delivering Incident Management training to EA staff as well as working in partnership with the UK Fire & Rescue Service. Stewart is currently an Associate Tutor at the Fire Service College, Moreton-in-Marsh, designing and delivering specialist Environment Protection training to Fire Officers and authoring the Response to Environmental Incidents chapter in the Fire Service Operations Manual.
Stewart designed the spill kit (Grab Pack) carried on every front line Fire Appliance as well as completing a Strategic Review of the provision of Environment Agency funded Environment Protection Equipment to the Fire Service.
He has spoken at Environment Protection and Incident Management conferences around the world and still loves delivering training, performing site environmental risk audits and reviews incident response plans.
